Fifteen years ago the Biker Community lost a kind of Guiding Light. They were always there making sure the direction was down the right path, reminding us of our main purpose and pushing us to the best path to follow. For those who were there - there is something to look back upon and ponder, those that weren't might call it the golden years... We Remember and carry on the traditions. The Hartzke Bike Show and Chili Cook-off is one of those time to remember the past and work toward a better future. In remembering the past we take extra time to list our missing friends and fellow riders: Ray Sly, Larry Vergon, Patty Spychalski, Chuck (What's Up Chuck?) Matson, Joe Ready, Vicki Looker, Dale McNutt, Johnny Duncan, Carol Glassburn, Charles Rininger, Albert Castro, Mike Kurtz, Gina Stone, John Davis, Little Al, Eric Wells and who could forget Dennis Hopper! It is with great sadness that we have lost so many in this short time. May their lives give others hope in the future. This event is a "Ride in Bike Show", it is meant as a way of not only remembering those who we lost but also the riders in that January 1996 Snow Storm to say a final farewell. This year we had another storm hit, even declared a Winter Snow Emergency for South Bend. Snow was above my waist and I wasn't sure if I could get a car onto the roads at that time. One person actually road, Dewey, Earning him the American Class and Best of Show. Jessie brought his snowmobile and this Yamaha won the Metric class. There was also a Cook-off later giving James (aka Sammy Hagar) best Chili. With the weather being what it has for the past few years we will be having the Memorial as usual in January (with the Cook-off). The Bike show will be held in March. Seems we are getting too old to be playing in the snow and the young have been taught too well that they should be responsible and safe with their bikes (as it should be!). January 25, 2011 |
